THE FRIDAY ROCK SHOW / THE SATURDAY NIGHT ROCK SHOW (Radio 1)
Two essential music programmes, fronted by larger-than-life personalities who are unfortunately no longer with us - Tommy Vance (TV) and Alan Freeman (Fluff). TV's show was more of a showcase for heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Gillan and Def Leppard, while Fluff usually trawled the archives for some truly exquisite material, which also included prog rock giants like Yes and Genesis, as well as playing current rock & metal tunes. I recorded a few Friday and Saturday shows, including one where TV looked back at Deep Purple and played the cracking Speed King, followed by Space Truckin'.
Fluff's speciality was playing old BBC concerts. He played a Led Zeppelin gig from 1969 back in '92 which had an explosive version of How Many More Times, Samson's 1980 stint at the Reading Festival and a live Rainbow show in Germany from '76. Like Tommy, this man sure had inimitable taste, folks.
In 1996, Fluff moved his show to Virgin 1215 every Friday nights and still played lots of kick@$$ music. I remember the first time I ever heard Gillan's blistering Mr. Universe and Nantucket Sleighride by Mountain in '97. When I listened to that, I just knew that tune rang a bell, and then it hit me - it was used for the ITV current affairs extravaganza Weekend World.
